St. Germain, Wisconsin: Everything You Need to Know

Lakes, snowmobile trails, and true northwoods character in the heart of Vilas County

The Short Answer

St. Germain sits at the center of Vilas County — Wisconsin's most lake-dense county with over 1,300 named lakes. It's quieter than Minocqua (20 minutes west) but just as well-positioned for fishing, snowmobiling, and northwoods cabin life. In winter it's one of the best snowmobile hubs in the Midwest; in summer the surrounding lakes are exceptional for walleye, bass, and panfish.

What Makes St. Germain Special

Vilas County has 1,326 named lakes — more lakes per square mile than anywhere in the world except Finland. St. Germain sits at the geographic center of this extraordinary density, with Big St. Germain Lake (1,638 acres) as the anchor and dozens of smaller lakes accessible within minutes. The town itself is small — a few thousand year-round residents — but it swells in summer and again in winter with visitors who've been coming to the same lake for generations.

What distinguishes St. Germain from neighboring Minocqua and Eagle River is scale and character. Minocqua has become a tourist town with heavy commercial development and traffic to match. Eagle River is the snowmobile capital of the world and builds its identity around that. St. Germain is quieter: a genuine northwoods village where the main activities are fishing, snowmobiling, and sitting on a dock. There's no outlet shopping, no amusement park, no waterpark resort. That's exactly what draws people to it.

The surrounding Nicolet National Forest adds millions of acres of public land to the recreational equation — hiking trails, trout streams, remote forest lakes with public access, and the kind of continuous north-woods landscape that's rare in the lower 48.

Summer Activities in St. Germain

·

Fishing — walleye, musky, bass, and panfish

Big St. Germain Lake is the anchor fishery — a 1,638-acre, 60-foot-deep lake with strong walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and panfish populations. The DNR surveys this lake regularly and the fishery is well-managed. Dozens of smaller lakes in the township offer panfish action that's genuinely excellent for families. A fishing license is required for anyone 16 and over; purchase online at the Wisconsin DNR website.

·

Boating and watersports

Most rental cabins on St. Germain-area lakes include dock access and many come with included watercraft — canoes, kayaks, paddleboards. For motorized boats, rentals are available in town. Big St. Germain Lake is large enough for waterskiing and tubing; the smaller surrounding lakes are ideal for quiet paddling.

·

Hiking in the Nicolet National Forest

The Nicolet National Forest boundary is minutes from St. Germain, with hundreds of miles of hiking trails ranging from flat lakeshore walks to more rugged ridge hikes. The North Country National Scenic Trail passes through the forest. Trout fishing on the Deerskin River and other designated trout streams is excellent for fly fishing.

·

Swimming

Vilas County's lakes are consistently clear and clean — sandy-bottomed lakes warmed by mid-July are ideal for swimming. Most rental cabins have sandy shorelines or gradual entry. The town beach on Little St. Germain Lake has a designated swim area for families.

❄️

Snowmobile Capital of the Midwest

Vilas County has over 600 miles of groomed snowmobile trails — more groomed trail density than almost anywhere in North America. St. Germain sits at the intersection of multiple major trail systems connecting to Eagle River, Land O' Lakes, and Rhinelander. Snowmobiles can be rented locally; most rental cabins have direct trail access. Prime season is January through mid-February when the base exceeds 12 inches. Check trail conditions at the Wisconsin Snowmobile Trails App before heading out.

Winter Activities in St. Germain

·

Snowmobiling

The Vilas County trail system is the main event in winter. Trail 1 — the major east-west corridor — runs directly through St. Germain and connects to Eagle River (site of the World Championship Snowmobile Derby each January) and Rhinelander. Local trail groomers maintain conditions through the season; donate to your local snowmobile club to support the trail system.

·

Ice fishing

Big St. Germain Lake freezes reliably in December and supports a strong ice fishing population through February. Walleye, perch, and northern pike are the primary targets. Ice shanty rentals are available locally; many cabins have direct lake access for walking out with gear. Check ice thickness before venturing on — 4 inches for foot travel, 5–6 for ATVs.

·

Cross-country skiing

The Nicolet National Forest maintains groomed cross-country ski trails in the winter, and several private operations near St. Germain offer tracked and backcountry options. The terrain is gently rolling — well-suited to intermediate skiers and families with older children.

St. Germain vs. Minocqua: Why the Less Famous Town Wins

Minocqua, 20 minutes west on Highway 70, is Vilas County's most recognized name — the 'Island City' with the heavily marketed resort strip, chain restaurants, and summer traffic that rivals a small city. Minocqua has excellent things to offer, but it has become a destination that primarily serves visitors who want resort amenities packaged in a northwoods wrapper. That's a different product.

St. Germain is what most people are actually looking for when they say they want to go 'up north': quiet, lake-focused, unselfconscious. You can drive to Minocqua for dinner and a souvenir if you need it — it's 20 minutes — but you come home to a dock on an uncrowded lake, not a resort strip. The cabin rates reflect this too: comparable waterfront properties near St. Germain run 15–25% less than Minocqua-market pricing.
