The Perfect Family Weekend in Spooner, Wisconsin

Two days in a real northwoods town — fishing, great food, a historic theater, and craft beer you won't find anywhere else

The Short Answer

Spooner is the real northwoods — a working county-seat town with excellent fishing lakes, a legitimate downtown with locally owned restaurants and breweries, and none of the tourist-trap pricing that's taken over places like Hayward. You don't need to leave Spooner all weekend. Between the water, the food, and the people, there's more than enough.

Why Spooner Is the Right Call

Spooner hits the sweet spot that most northwoods towns used to occupy before tourism took over: genuine character, excellent lakes within minutes, real local restaurants where families eat on a Tuesday night, and no premium pricing driven by brand recognition. The county seat of Washburn County, Spooner is a functional town — hardware store, good grocery, and a diner that's been serving the same breakfast for decades. It feels like the real thing because it is.

The downtown is small and walkable with a legitimate cluster of locally owned businesses along Walnut Street — a craft brewery, a historic movie theater, a coffee shop worth stopping at twice, and a bake shop that's been going since 1952. This is where your weekend actually happens. The lakes are right outside of town, the water is cold and clear, and the whole area operates at a pace that reminds you why you left the city.

Saturday

1

7:00am — Breakfast at River Street Cafe

Start at River Street Cafe on North River Street — home-cooked breakfast, big portions, the kind of place where the staff knows the regulars by name. Open at 6am, closes at 2pm, so don't sleep through it. Order the breakfast plate and ask what the daily special is. This is not a tourist restaurant. It's where Spooner actually eats breakfast.

2

8:30am — Coffee at Alley Cats

Alley Cats Coffee on West Beaverbrook Avenue is one of the best coffee stops in the area — small-batch roasts, espresso drinks, baked goods, and a drive-thru if you're heading straight to the water. Rated 4.8 on Tripadvisor, #3 restaurant in Spooner overall. Get a muffin. It's worth it.

3

9:30am — Fishing

The first hours of the morning are the best fishing of the day. Walleye and bass are active in the shallows, the water is glass calm, and the lake feels like it belongs only to you. Kids who haven't fished before can start with a bobber and worm over the weed edge — even a small bluegill is exciting at that age. The lakes around Spooner are well-managed and rarely crowded outside of holiday weekends.

4

12:00pm — Lunch downtown, then explore Walnut Street

Walnut Street is Spooner's main corridor and worth an hour of wandering. The Spooner Bake Shoppe at 217 Walnut has been making everything from scratch since 1952 — pastries, bread, cookies, soups, and sandwiches. Pick up something for the cabin. The Palace Theatre at 238 Walnut is a 1939 historic theater that just reopened under new ownership in December 2024 after a long closure — check what's showing. The Corner House Pub at 104 Walnut has one of the best tin ceilings you'll see anywhere and a great beer selection if you want a midday stop.

5

2:00pm — Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum or Fish Hatchery

The Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum is a genuine hidden gem — the history of canoe building in the region is more interesting than you'd expect, and it's well done. The Spooner Fish Hatchery has a nature trail and is a good stop with kids who want to see where the walleye stocked into their lake actually come from. Both are free or low cost.

6

4:00pm — Round Man Brewing

Round Man Brewing at 234 Walnut Street is the anchor of Spooner's evening. Family-owned since 2018, 14 original beers on tap, upper-end pub food with a blue-collar feel. The curved poured concrete seating was built for conversation. Open Wednesday through Saturday, 4–8pm. Get there early on weekends — it fills up. This is the kind of local brewery that makes you want to stay another night.

7

7:00pm — Campfire

Back at the cabin before dark. Hotdogs or brats over the fire, s'mores after, and the conversation that happens when screens go away and the northwoods takes over. Loons across the lake. Frogs at the water's edge. The smell of wood smoke. If you under-schedule the weekend and leave room for this, it becomes the thing everyone remembers.

Sunday

1

7:00am — Morning fishing or paddling

One more morning on the water before you pack up. Fish the walleye structure you identified Saturday, or take the kayak out for a sunrise run — loons, herons, osprey, and the occasional eagle are routine on Washburn County lakes in summer. Sunday mornings have a particular quality up here: quieter, nobody else on the water, the weekend winding down gently.

2

9:00am — Cabin breakfast

The best Sunday-morning cabin breakfast is the one you make yourself. Pick up eggs, bacon, and good bread from the Spooner grocery on Saturday evening — a real sit-down breakfast with everyone still in pajamas, the lake visible through the screen door, is worth the 20 minutes of cooking.

3

11:00am — Bald Man Brewing (day trip worth taking)

If you want to add one more stop before heading home, Bald Man Brewing is off Highway 53 between Spooner and Minong — an affiliate of Round Man, same owner, different location and feel. It's the kind of place you only know about if someone tells you. Worth the short drive north.

4

1:00pm — Head home

Hit the road by early afternoon to beat Sunday traffic on Highway 53 south. You'll be back. The trick is always to leave while you're still wanting more.

Kids Fish Free in Wisconsin

Wisconsin residents and non-residents under age 16 do not need a fishing license. You can put a rod in a kid's hands the moment you arrive — no paperwork, no fee. Start with a simple bobber and worm rig in 4–6 feet of water near weed structure. Bluegill are the perfect starter fish: they bite readily, they fight on light tackle, and they're everywhere in northern Wisconsin lakes.
