Sawyer County offers hundreds of miles of ATV and UTV trails through the Northwoods, including the Chequamegon National Forest and Flambeau River State Forest. Side-by-sides up to 65 inches wide are legal on all ATV trails including National Forest trails. Non-resident trail passes are required — Wisconsin residents must display a current registration sticker. All operators born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete an ATV/UTV safety certification course.

Sawyer County's Chequamegon National Forest contains over 140 miles of ATV trails across three separate systems — and uniquely in Wisconsin, side-by-sides up to 65 inches wide are legal on ALL National Forest trails here. The Dead Horse Run's 78-mile system is one of the longest continuous ATV routes in the state.

Dead Horse Trail

Flambeau River State Forest

Tuscobia Trail

Easy74 mi

Runs from Birchwood to Park Falls on an abandoned railroad grade. Open April 15 to November 15. Camping available halfway at Ojibwa Park. Connects to Dead Horse Trail north and Flambeau Trail south.

Rules & Regulations

  • Non-resident trail pass required — purchase at dnr.wisconsin.gov/permits/registrations/atv/nonresidentTrailPass.html
  • Wisconsin residents must display current registration sticker
  • All operators born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete ATV/UTV safety certification course
  • Minimum age: 12 for ATV, 16 for UTV
  • Headlights must be on at all times
  • Side-by-sides up to 65 inches wide are legal on all ATV trails including National Forest
  • Stay on marked ATV trails — Birkie Trails and marked hunter/walking trails are closed to ATVs
  • ATVs may not travel on trails crossing private property unless marked as ATV trail
  • Flambeau Forest trails closed November 15 to May 15
  • Tuscobia Trail closed November 15 to April 15

The City of Hayward has designated streets open to ATV travel: Olson Road to Hospital Road, Havenwood Lane, Guard Street, Minnie Avenue, portions of Beal Avenue, Illinois Avenue, East Second Street, East Fourth Street, Fifth Street (entire length), Johnson Street, Railroad Street from Beal to Hwy 27, Hospital Road west to Company Lake Road, and Rock Creek Road south of Hwy B.
